Turkey Travels ~

Hello my lovelies!

As I'm sure you're aware, I went to Turkey at the end of August for two weeks with my family (minus my oldest brother who is currently training to be a diving instructor in Egypt).

We flew into Antalya International Airport and checked ourselves into a beautiful 4 star resort hotel about half an hour away from the airport. Now this was a holiday all about relaxing - we've all had pretty stressful years (me doing my A Levels, my brother finishing his degree, my dad fighting with work, my mum keeping us all sane and alive) so we didn't actually leave the hotel once during the fortnight we were there. That may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it suited us down to the ground. It was a holiday of sunbathing, lots and lots and lots of reading, swimming in the sea, and drinking. Lots of drinking.

The view from our balcony - absolutely beautiful

Listening to Vampire Weekend on the beach - perfection

5 days before we were due to leave, we randomly got upgraded to a fancy suite free of charge! This meant that we had two large bedrooms between the four of us, both with en suites containing huge jacuzzis, and their own balconies; a living room between; and a third bit of balcony with a private pool! We still don't know why they upgraded us, but we certainly weren't complaining.

 Our private pool at night

Chillin' in the private pool one lunch time
The view from our new room - equally beautiful

Aside for the gorgeous weather (it was between 32 and 37 degrees C every single day, only dropping to about 26 in the evenings), my favourite part of the holiday was definitely getting the chance to read for fun. In the fortnight I read 7 books: WinterGirls by Laurie Halse-Anderson, Q: A Love Story by Evan Mandery; The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman; Tenth Circle by Jodie Picoult; Life After Life by Kate Atkinson; When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman; and The Magician's Guild by Trudi Canavan. If you would like more information/to hear my thoughts on these books in a future post or video, let me know in the comments.

I also enjoyed simply lying on the beach listening to my iPod and watching the sea and the other people paddle in the water. Two songs that I kept returning to on this holiday that you should definitely check out were All of This by The Naked and the Famous, and Sloom by Of Monsters and Men. Both very different songs; both excellent.

All in all it was an absolutely wonderful holiday and I got to spend some brilliant quality time with my family, including spending about 2 hours one night after dinner with my brother coming up with bad jokes and puns. I have returned with a beast of a tan, lovely blonder hair, and apparently I look more healthy than I've looked in 3 years. Wonderful.

Thanks for reading, let me know in the comments if you went anywhere lovely this summer :)

PSSSSSST - yesterday I uploaded the third Letters to Me series in which I write a letter to my past self for every year of secondary school. Be sure to subscribe to see the rest of the videos that will be coming out in the next couple of weeks!

Three Weeks...

Hello my lovelies!

Sorry it's been a while, as I sad in my last post, I've been in Turkey for two weeks enjoying 35 degree weather, brilliant sunshine, the warmest sea I've ever encountered, and rather a lot of cocktails. I will make a post about my trip sometime soon, but for now I thought I'd let you know what my life's going to be like for the next 20 days.

In exactly 20 days I am moving into my accommodation at university. I shall be studying for a degree in History at one of the top universities in the country and I am beyond excited and beyond terrified. I also have rather a lot to do before I move. So I thought I'd share with you my Before Uni To-Do List.

  • Buy kitchen equipment
  • Buy bedding
  • Buy stationary (folders, pens, highlighters, a planner, sticky-notes - so many sticky-notes)
  • Buy my Fresher's Week ticket for college when it's announced
  • Buy Vampire Weekend ticket (a group of people I've been talking to for the past couple of months who are going to my uni have all decided we're going to see Vampire Weekend together in November)
  • Set up direct debit for fees/rent
  • Work out a budget
  • Say goodbye to the people I'm going to miss from home
  • Buy some more winter clothes with any money I have left over
As you can see rather a lot of money is going to be spent in the next 20 days...

As for blog posts, well I'll try to get as many up as possible before I go to uni as once I'm not sure how much time I'm going to have to sit down and write blog posts. I also plan on finishing my 'Letters to Me' series on my Youtube channel before I go, the first two of which you can see here.

If any of you are starting university soon, let me know in the comments what you still have left to do before you go!

Thanks for reading :)

Club to Catwalk~

Hello my lovelies,

Two posts in two days! Aren't you lucky! I suppose it's to make up for the fact that I"m going to be in Turkey for two weeks so won't be posting anything. Try not to miss me too much. Today's post is slightly different than normal - it's about an exhibition.

Currently on at the V&A in London is a wonderful exhibition called Club to Catwalk, and today I boarded a train with one of my best friends and went to check it out. The exhibition is a showcase of London fashion in the 1980's, a time when the fashion scene in Britain was changing rapidly and the 'rules of fashion' were being broken. In the 1980s London began to develop a huge club culture (less drunken grinding and more subgroups meeting and dancing and expressing themselves freely in places such as Taboo and Hell and other far more creative names than Revolution). The exhibition highlighted how the explosion of club culture inspired huge changes in fashion, bringing with it Punk, Goth, Fetish and a whole other array of fashion.

The space is divided into sections such as Fetish fashion including some surprisingly wearable looking gold corsets, and some slightly less wearable looking gold leg straps; an array of denim jackets by various designers, including Vivienne Westwood who features heavily in this exhibition, commissioned by the magazine BLITZ; and amid the madness of shoulderpads and bold patterns, some extremely beautiful an elegant evening wear. The exhibition, which is spread across two floors, really captures the vast array of London fashion int he '80s.

As you wander the exhibition, the signs and boards describe how the London fashion students of the day were influenced by the vibrant and diverse nightlife growing in London. Clubbing in the 1980s wasn't about getting smashed and getting with the nearest member of your chosen sex, it was about creative minds (musicians, writers, fashion designers and the like) joining together and being truly free. Forget the crowded clubs we frequent now - clubbing in the 1980s was intimate.

Interspersed among the designs are projections of the catwalk shows from the decade in which the models not only look human, but also look like they're having fun - a far cry from today's catwalk shows. Iconic music from the decade played as you wandered the exhibition, and upstairs is a covered alcove with 20 or so small screens showing true clubbing culture in the 1980s.

My favourite pieces in the exhibition include Vivienne Westwood's elegantly draped togas, a fantastic 1986green hooped dress by Georgina Godley, and the aforementioned denim jackets commissioned by BLITZ - including one that seemed to double as a swiss army knife with forks and wrenches dangling from it.

This blog post cannot do the exhibition justice, so I urge you to go check it our yourself if you can. It's on at the V&A in South Kensington until the 16th February 2014 and tickets only cost £5. It's a thoroughly good way to spend an hour or two if you're at all into fashion, clubbing, and/or the 1980s.

Red Alert - I Have a Problem~

Hello my lovelies!

Sorry it's been a while since my last post - results came out last week (I got into my top choice uni! Yay!) and I've been doing a lot of admin stuff for that. I have however made another Letters to Me video which you can check out here. It will be a little while before the next one as I go on holiday on Friday for a fortnight, but I promise they'll all be done before I go off to uni at the very end of September! Right, now that catch-up is dealt with, on to all things beauty. Specifically lipstick.

If you speak to any of my friends you'll know that I'm an absolute lipstick addict. I rarely leave the house without lipstick, and most of my lipstick is BRIGHT. Particularly bright red. Most of my clothes are black/white/grey, so I find bright red lipstick injects a bit of boldness and colour into my look. As such, I seem to own rather a lot of red lipsticks (probably not a lot compared to fancy beauty gurus, but still a fair few). Thus, I thought I'd review each one of them for you so that any newbies to the red lipstick scene can see a choice, and any experienced veterans can nod in agreement sagely (or shake your head in utterly disgust, we'll see).

These are ranked from least favourite to favourite

Rimmel Kate Moss Lasting Finish - 01

This was the first red lipstick I actually spent money on myself (most of my lipsticks are ones I've stolen from my mum because I ignore the fact that makeup can expire) and I really like the colour. It's a lovely deep red colour that's bright without being clown-esque. But although the colour is one of my favourites, I'm not enamoured with the formulation. It applies really smoothly which is a good start, however I find that this is the smudgiest of all my red lipsticks. The number of times I've worn this on a night out and had to have friends wipe smeared lipstick off my face. It tends to come off from the middle first, so if I'm not careful I end up looking like I've just put bright red lip-liner on - not a good look. It's also the only red lipstick of mine that has a habit or winding up on my teeth. Unimpressed.

Rating: 2/5

Christian Dior - Indian Red

At a glance, this is quite a 'clowny' colour, and I definitely have to be wary wearing this one. If I'm not careful it can make skin look sickly, and I've definitely made the mistake of wearing this with a moderately trampy outfit and ending up looking like a dodgy prostitute by the end of the night, which is something I try to steer clear of. Some days however, I apply this lipstick and it adds just the right pop of colour. This is more of an orange-toned red than a blue-toned red which is why it doesn't always work for me. The application and lasting power of this lipstick is excellent, as you would expect from a Dior product, so no complaints in that department. A good lipstick, the colour just doesn't always work for me personally.

Rating: 3/5

Kryolan - 080 (I think)

I can't actually find exactly what colour I have, I think it's number 80 in their classic range but I'm not entirely sure.  Kryolan are a makeup company that supplies film, theatre, and TV, and as such they have some truly spectacular lipstick (and eye) colours. I bought this when I was dancing competitively, and as any festival dancer knows bright red lipstick is a staple. I rediscovered this a few months ago in my draw and decided to start wearing it. As it's designed as stage makeup, it's a very bright colour, but it's a blue-toned colour so it's more consistently wearable for me than the Dior. Again, no complaints in the application department, and as you'd expect for stage/film/TV makeup the lasting power is one of the best. When I want to go truly bright, this is the lipstick I turn to.

Rating: 4/5

Rimmel Moisture Renew - Diva Red

This is pretty much the same colour as the Kate Moss one (also by Rimmel) and this is my go-to red lipstick for during the day. It's a darker red than the Kryolan so it's more of a sultry colour. The staying power on this lipstick isn't the best, but it doesn't smudge all over the place so I can cope with reapplying this throughout the day. Definitely one of the more wearable bright red lipsticks out there.

Rating: 4/10

and last, and my favourite bright red lipstick...

Rimmel Apocalips - Big Bang

If you're a lip product fan and you haven't heard of Rimmel's Apocalips collection then I'm not quite sure where you've been over the last few months! There is definitely a reason this is one of the most raved about lip products in the beauty-sphere at the moment. Probably best defined as a liquid lipstick, this product is PHENOMENAL. A little bit definitely goes a long way as it is extremely thick and extremely pigmented, and it's super shiny so there's definitely no need for a lipgloss over the top. The colour is probably midway between the Kryolan and the Moisture Renew on the brightness scale, and I find it's the perfect colour for a night out. The staying power is exceptional, last time I wore this I didn't have to reapply it once (although I did smudge it a bit but that's because I'd been eating dorritos and I wiped crumbs off my face forgetting I was wearing lipstick...). 100% my favourite lip product at the moment (I have two other colours in the range).

Rating: 5/5

So there you have it, my selection of bright red lipsticks. No doubt I will continue adding to the red collection, but for now I think this will probably suffice.

Thanks for reading, let me know in the comments what your favourite red lipsticks are!

Letters to Me~

Hello my lovelies!

With results fast approaching (oh god THURSDAY), and uni on the horizon, I've been thinking a lot about my time at school. Secondary school (Year 7 - 13) was a mixture of fantastic times and absolutely terrible times, and I definitely made a lot of mistakes at school (of course I did, I started at age 11 an finished at age 18). So I've started a project called 'Letters to Me' in which I write myself a letter for every year of secondary school.

The first one is already up on Youtube (WHY won't it let me share the video to my blog?) and the rest will be coming over the next few weeks (I'm thinking 2 a week ish). Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss any of them!

Thanks for reading, let me know in the comments if there's any advice you'd like to give your past self about school. x

Brighton Babyyyyy~

Hello my lovelies!

Today I come to you with a slightly different post - a travel(ish) post! On Thursday me and my friends Rosie and Heni hopped on a train and went to Brighton for a couple of days. It was a short trip but an utterly fabulous one nonetheless, particularly as I'd never been to Brighton before (despite the fact that it's only a 2 hour train journey away from me). It's such a beautiful town, and full of all sorts of weird and wonderful surprises.

Highlights:

  • All the quirky vintage shops full of boxes of old black and white photographs
  • Buying a journal made of a recycled book that someone received as a Christmas present in 1911
  • THE SEA
  • Chatting to the people in the henna tattoo place
  • 2 for 1 cocktails and fruity shots
  • Buying wine and Pringles at 2am
  • Stumbling across the open air cinema on the beach that was showing Les Mis
  • Burger King as the perfect hangover breakfast
Lowlights:
  • Being groped in the clubs far too much
  • ...
  • nope that's literally it
  • the only bad thing about the trip
Overall Rating:
A solid 9/10. A beautiful place that I need to go back to and explore fully. A++ would recommend.
